Let's Talk GOLDEN GLOBES!

It's that time of year again, kiddos! The Golden Globes have come and gone, and in their trail they have left chaos and controversy. And I don't only mean because Avatar won Best Motion Picture -Drama (UGH. Don't get me started on that one).

The real controversies, at least in my eyes, start on the red carpet. That's where America has some say in the winners and losers. And there were a lot of each, let me tell you. I'll begin with the good news.

Jennifer Aniston, as always, looks FANTASTIC. Good God, I wish I knew her secret. At 40, Jenn looks just as beautiful as she did back in her Friends days. Although she came under some criticism and ended up on a few worst dressed lists (WTF?!) for wearing black yet again, Jenn is one of the best in my opinion. Always consistent, she never over does it, preferring to stick to elegant black gowns with unique elements like the draping of this Valentino couture gown. Her shoes are Versace and elongate her gorgeous stems even more than they normally are, which is extremely helpful when wearing a thigh-high slit. A dress cut like this is difficult to pull off without looking a bit thick in the thighs, but Jenn manages to do it effortlessly. Big props for that!

I'm not a huge fan of Sandra Bullock - Miss Congeniality is all I can think of when I see her. But apparently her performance in The Blind Side was extremely impressive, and so is her choice of gown. The violet Bottega Veneta creation is absolutely lovely on Sandra, and she stands out without trying too hard. We don't see that enough, so way to go, girl! Also, she recently donated $1 million to the Haiti relief drive. She's quickly redeeming herself for Miss Congeniality as far as I'm concerned, and she's one of the best dressed for this year. Absolutely lovely.

Unfortunately, not everyone was as lovely as these two fabulous women. There were some other winners, such as Kate Hudson, Drew Barrymore, Penelope Cruz, and many more, but there were also the flops, as there are every year. Some stars just can't seem to get
their act (or their stylists) together! Although definitely not the most heinous, Fergie makes my worst dressed list. Sorry, hun!

Let me say one thing before I cut into Fergie-Ferg. The Golden Globes are not a chance to relive your high school senior prom. That is why I absolutely abhor Fergie's Ellie Saab dress. I have personal beef with the color lavender, but I could have overlooked it if Fergie hadn't accessorized with a tacky orange tan, ridiculous cleavage, cakey make-up, and a I-Just-Had-a-Quickie-in-the-Limo hair-do. Seriously, I'm having high school flashbacks, and they aren't pleasant!! Really, Ferg? Thank God you had Josh Duhamel on your arm. He's almost sexy enough to distract me from that outfit (although I can't imagine why he stuck around all night)!

Check out more fashion flops on Diane Kruger (Christian Lacroix gone so, so wrong), Tina Fey (I'm actually at a loss for words), Mariah Carey (oh hey, boobs!!), Cher (I swear she does it on purpose at this point), and Rita Wilson (her dress may have matched her drapes).

Freida Pinto

Anyone see Slumdog Millionare? Well, if you saw it you probably saw how BEAUTIFUL Frieda Pinto is! Not only is she gorgeous but girl has a fashion sense! I love it! Her style is simple with neutral colors, but it works for her! Pinto's dress pictured to the right is my favorite dress. I love the draping, and the bright blue works on her skin tone.

I can't wait to see what she'll wear at the 2010 Oscars!

Grrrr..

Give me some AIR!!
I am literally swooning right now over this look.

Statement said it earlier, but fur is HOT this season! Actually, let's be real. Fur is always hot.

OK WAIT. Before you freak out, I know, Mount Holyoke is a tough crowd when it comes to wearing fur. Power to the PETA and all that. But there is no reason why ladies with a soft spot for animals can't rock this too! I am all for going faux, because who wouldn't want to look this foxy??

The fur coat makes this outfit, without a doubt. It is the perfect tawny color, and her red sweater complements it beautifully. Paired with a darkwash skinny jean and simple booties, this chick can't go wrong if she tried.

Note: She has a scarf tied around her waist to add her own edge. Takes some guts to try it, but don't be afraid to make an outfit your own, ladies! That scarf takes this outfit from simply chic and sophisticated to edgy and totally fierce. She is daring, and she knows how to rock a fur coat.

Anybody wanna buy me one?! I won't say no, I promise!

Willow Goes RiRi

Willow Smith, the pint-sized actress debuted a new haircut recently, channelling her inner Rihanna.  I'm shocked that Jada and Will let their precious nine-year-old step out on the trend train and chop her hair off.

Obviously Willow would look good bald, I mean look at who her parents are...two of the most beautiful people in the world!  I'm glad they're letting young Willow step out on her own!  Not even I have the guts to buzz my hair to mohawk status (despite the constant nagging of HardStuff).

The buzz is in and Willow both knows it and shows it.  She's following the footsteps my personal fashion role-model, Rihanna, and I like it!

LOVE.

Congrats Willow!

FAUXtastic Photo of the Day!

I know we're all longing for some sun or at least a way to keep warm.  Today's photo of the day is more like the photo of the year! Photographed on the streets of London, this fashionista is keeping warm it a winter must-have.  I'm hoping it's faux, but either way it's warm so I kind of don't care! (Sorry PETA)

Her combination of lacy tights, which I wear religiously, a wintry, white sweater, a slightly oversized, yet still form-fitting, "faux" jacket, and those to DIE for knee-high slouchy boots....is, well, amazing.  I'm in love with this look.

I'm adding those boots to my wish- list.  Thank in advance Mom and Dad!
And Santa, I wouldn't hate you for making my Christmas fauxtastic! Just saying! Hint, Hint!

Back to Basics

Today, instead of working on my final essay for my Literature class, I'm going to bestow some wisdom upon you. Take heed, ladies.

Jeans will never go out of style. Honest to God, they will never ever go away. And that's a wonderful thing, because if you invest in a great pair of jeans, you will literally own them until they fall to pieces.

In my closet, I have seven pairs of jeans. Some flared, some skinny, some high-waisted, some lowrise. Mostly dark wash, they differ slightly in lengths, pocket style, stitching, etc. Some of them I've had all throughout highschool, and some have been patched and repatched. But they all have one very important thing in common: THEY AREN'T UGLY.

I will be the first to say that I love over-the-top fashion, loud colors, sequins, a lil flashy-flashy going on.. But EMBELLISHED JEANS ARE A NO NO NOOOO! They are hideous, and they will never cease to be hideous. Jeans should be kept clean and simple, and you should build your outfit around them, not let them eat your outfit and then vomit all over it in embroidery and rhinestones. Ickkk. Just don't do it. Say no. And when you see someone else wearing them, AVERT YOUR EYES. This Disease of Don'ts could be contagious!!

For nice, CLASSY, attractive denim, check out Banana Republic, Citizens of Humanity, Seven for all Mankind, and Paige Premium Denim. They may be a little higher in the price range, but they will last for years and years to come, and they will NEVER be tacky.

SWIFT New 'Do!

Everyone knows I'm not the hugest fan of Taylor Swift.  The girl couldn't sing live if her life depended on it...or at least she couldn't sing WELL live!! That's not the point...

TayTay is known for her luscious locks and that southern curl.  In fact,  we can never tell if she just happened to wake up with pin-curls or if she sat in the styling chair for two hours to achieve her look (most likely the latter).

In all of her five minutes of fame, T. Swift hardly ever branches out from her wind-blown, not quite beachy, but still slightly beach-waved hair.....but NOW she's making some serious changes.

Tay was spotted recently with a sleek new 'do, and I am LOVING IT!

What are your thoughts!?

STRONG, SEXY WOMEN!

I'm BAAACCCKKK!!!! Sorry to be MIA for so long, but the life of a college student is a busy one. Also, I've been working on some of my own writing, and as a result, I've slacked on updating on DC. But no more of that!

Some of you are probably wondering wtf is going on with SHOULDER PADS lately. Well, I'm here to tell you that something wonderful is happening; the '80s are making yet another comeback and it couldn't be more fierce.

Rihanna is quickly becoming just as famous for her cutting edge style as she is for her music, and she wears her clothes with a confidence that should be part of all women's wardrobes. One of the first to jump on the shoulder-pad-rebirth bandwagon, Ri Ri wears them proudly and looks absolutely fabulous doing it. It's important to not cross the line between bold and tacky, and Rihanna manages to stay on the right side of it by pairing her fabulously flashy top with a relatively simple skirt. Fresh, edgy, and architecturally divine.

I know, I know. Many of you probably think this trend can't disappear fast enough, and spandex and jumpsuits can go right along with it, please and thank you!! But hear me out. The thing I really love about this trend is what it does for the female body. The exaggeration of the shoulders creates an imposing, powerful silhouette - it's next to impossible to wear these shoulders without standing up straight and feeling sexy-strong. Also, broadened shoulders make the waist look slimmer, so think twice before you disregard this trend, ladies, and try on a couple choices!

In my opinion, the perfect place to find a workable shoulder pad piece is a thriftstore. Dig through some racks of blazers and odds are you'll find a gem amongst the grunge. DON'T be turned off by loud colors or funky cuts! Let this jacket be obnoxious! Wear it with confidence and feel empowered. With those pads on, it'll be so much easier to carry the weight of the world.

HATS, HATS, HATS......

Waking up to the snow was fun for maybe about five minutes. The excitement went away when I realized that I have to actually walk all the way to the other side of campus at 8:35! JOY! Well, I decided to celebrate our first real snow storm here at Moho, I'm going to talk about the winter hat trends!!!!!!!!! (I know I'm weird, but I get really excited about hats).

1. The Slouchy Hat-ALWAYS IN! I love this hat. It goes with every jacket, outfit, and shoe. Its keeps your head warm, but its also super stylish.

2. The Beret-I'm ALL about bringing the beret back. It's just so classic!

3. The Cloche Hat-We see Leighton Meester's character on Gossip Girl rocking this hat. Everyone can pull this look off.

Sorry to be harsh but Mohos, one request: NO POM POMS ON FITTED HATS. Their not cute.

Over the Knee Boots? Yay or Nay?

I was browsing through Vogue's "Best Dressed" for the week, and came upon a picture of Chanel Iman (Famous runway model) wearing black over the knee boots. I was SHOCKED! REALLY CHANEL?!?! Put her in the movie Pretty Woman and she would have fit right in. I'm sorry Chanel, we love you, but YOU ARE VICTIM OF A FASHION FAUX PAS.

Make-DOWN.

Besides being known for her ability to play the catty Blair Waldorf on the hit series Gossip Girl and her sultry singing voice that seems to be taking over the pop charts, Leighton Meester is revered for her adorable dimples, and, of course, flawless makeup.

Meester usually sports an all-natural look.  BUT....this time, she's got it all wrong.

Being a pop queen WILL require a few dramatic moves, including some bold fashion statements. However, THIS particular look will not cut it.  Gold Eyeliner, a purple raccoon smokey eye, AND a red lip? NO, NO, and NO.

Love you Leighton, but this time you got it wrong.

Hit Or Miss?

I've always thought that Natalie Portman is a timeless beauty with a twist.  She has classic features with just enough edge to pull off either a pixie cut or long, luscious locks.  BUT, when it comes to fashion, Portman has let me down on numerous occasions.

This week at the New York premier of the new movie Brothers, which I am dying to see by the way, Portman showed up in QUITE the outfit.

A cobalt blue Jason Wu mini dress
Royal purple Aldo peep-toe pumps
AND
a yellow/green clutch

If you're not confused..well, I AM.

Each of the pieces was respectable in it's own right, but somehow all three just didn't work together.  My opinion? Ditch the shoes because the cobalt dress and yellow clutch combo is to die for!

DO YOU REALLY UNDERESTIMATE YOUR DAD WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION?

The answer to that question is: I used to

Once upon a time, seven years ago, my Dad came home with a present. I was so excited to rip open the paper and find Limited Too shorts with dance written on the bootie (unfortunately I was really into Limited Too. The obsession lasted approximately three years). However, I was shocked to find a pair of zip at the knee khaki pants and.... wait for it.......a pair of HUSH PUPPIES. REMEMBER THOSE!!?
I smiled through my teeth (translation: fake smile), and proceeded to hide both items in the back of my closet. One sunny monday morning I woke up to find my khaki pants and the horrendous hush puppies lying on the floor. My Dad barged in and said "COME ON YOU'LL LOOK GREAT, COME ON". My Mom even made me wear them together. Therefore I couldn't back down. I walked into school with every one pointing and laughing at me. All I wanted to do was hide in the coat closet and never come out. That was it, I had my first official fashion faux pas and I blamed it all on my father.

Lets flash forward to four years later: I continued to refuse to shop with my Dad. I never wanted a repeat of that heinous outfit. I needed a new coat, and I begged my Mom to come to Bloomingdales with me. She didn't want to go, and she convinced that my Dad go with me. Whining wouldn't get me out of this situation, so I surrendered and went shopping with my Dad. Surprisingly, my Dad was open to the styles that I liked. It was then that my Dad pulled out my all time favorite Marc Jacobs military green jacket. I wore the jacket to death.

That wasn't the end, my Dad kept revealing this amazing fashion sense he had never shown to anyone. I mean the guy wears black socks with adidas sandals! No one ever thought that the guy could pick out a high fashion jacket for his daughter. It kept progressing. After I wore out the military jacket, it was time for a new one. After a trip to Century 21, my Dad found a gorgeous Donna Karan peacoat. It was my first sophisticated piece, and I loved every inch of it.
At that point I knew I could trust my Dad enough to help me find a fairy tale prom dress. After hours in department stores, vintage stores, and even the mall, we ventured into the online world. We casually looked on the Betsey Johnson website to find my prom dress in the sale section. My Dad picked out a sea foam green dress with a ribbon belt; we both knew that this dress was the PERFECT dress.

LESSON OF THE DAY: DON'T UNDERESTIMATE YOUR DAD. Even if he caused a fashion disaster seven years ago, just give him a chance.

You'll Thank Me Later...

Hello to all of you Twilight fans! I know you're out there, and despite what you want me to think, I KNOW you were sitting in that theater, third row, at exactly 11:30PM waiting for the premier of "New Moon" to start.

Trust me, I was there with you...waiting for the big reveal.  You know what I'm talking about...Taylor Lautner.  Shirtless.  Amazing.

So what does this have to do with fashion? Let me explain! Taylor Lautner, thanks to months in the gym and daily protein shakes, has officially informed us all that shirtless is IN.  Shirtless is SO in.

So if you know someone who has the abs do us all a favor?... make sure to steal his shirt!

I'll thank YOU later!

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

Remember the cute little designer who won season 4 of Project Runway? Would it help if I said he came up with the catch phrase "THAT'S SO FIERCE"? I'm talking about Christian V Siriano, a finalist who went above and beyond Project Runway. Not only did he show his fall and spring collections at New York Fashion Week, but he's also dressing celebrities like Lady Gaga and Victoria Beckham and designing costumes for movies like Eloise in Paris.
I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about Siriano's Spring collection for 2010. I appreciated Siriano's collection because he focused all of the pieces on three colors: beige, ocean blue, and fiery red. The pieces went from work friendly, after work drinks, to formal party savvy. Siriano used a lot of organza shapes, shapes that had flow to it. There were a lot of satin materials involved.
Can Siriano top this collection? I hope so! I can't wait to see what he comes up with!

Crazy. Fabulous.

Let's face it.  The Alexander McQueen Spring 2010 collection is crazy.  Outrageous.  If you haven't spotted his latest line, just check out the new "Bad Romance" video.  Lady Gaga is pretty much dressed head to toe in McQueen's insane inventions.  Since the line is so vast, I thought we'd focus on shoes.

Don't ask me how those models walk in these.

I have no idea! Props to you ladies!

Amsale Aberra & the Little White Dress

Amsale has really made a name for herself as a designer of couture bridal gowns that are simple, yet elegant.  Although her Fall '09 Bridal Collection didn't particularly catch my eye (too much tule and poof for my taste), I can't deny that Amsale has coined the term "Little White Dress.

The LWD is kind of taking over--all seasons, all occasions!

As you can see, Amsale's LWDs are simple and modern!
I love her modern take on lace, and of course I'm all for a bubble hem on a classic babydoll dress!

Also, just because I couldn't resist! Here is bridal gown from one of Amsale's past collections (obviously not gaudy or tule-full).

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!

Goo-goo For GAGA!

This picture is a throwback to about seven months ago, but it still makes a statement.  Lady Gaga does bubbles like no other.

Love her or hate her, you have to say she's ballsy....no pun intended.

Or maybe it was.

Picture This!

Today was an oddly warm day for early November.  Quite spring-like actually...And it reminded me of music and vibrancy and, of course, this picture.

I'm heading to the nearest thrift store to pick up those bangles and that oddly 80's top!  And on my way, I'll be playing "Music is My Hot Hot Sex" by the Brazilian band, CSS. Shout out to São Paulo!!
